Request Samples

Scientific ocean drilling samples from all programs, including International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP3), International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP), may be requested through the Sample, Data, and Request Manager (SDRM)(opens in a new tab). Requests for samples from all scientific ocean drilling repositories are made through SDRM.

Please review the Scientific Ocean Drilling Programs: Sample, Data, and Obligations Policy before requesting samples.

How to Read a Sample ID (opens in a new tab)
All material recovered during scientific ocean drilling needs to be identifiable. A standardized system is used to ensure accurate and efficient identification at all scales. This tutorial will walk you through all elements of a sample ID, from the expedition (~2 month period at sea) through the cm-scale of core material.

IODP Depth Scales Terminology (opens in a new tab)
The measurement of depth is a central concept for scientific ocean drilling. The issue of depth in scientific ocean drilling is complex, as depth is measured and used in many different ways.
