Budget Guidance For Proposals
The Gulf Coast Repository can assist with proposal budgets by generating quotes for laboratory instrument use and sample measurements.
Letters of Support are also available from the Gulf Coast Repository, upon request.

Ocean Drilling Legacy Asset Project Proposals
It is strongly recommended that PIs submitting ocean drilling legacy asset project proposals to the NSF U.S. Sub-Seafloor Sampling Program (NSF S3P) work with the scientific ocean drilling repository(s) where the proposal legacy assets are curated to demonstrate project feasibility related to availability of the legacy assets.

Laboratory Costs
GCR User Fees are the same regardless of if a researcher visits the GCR to personally use services/instruments or if services/data collection is completed by GCR staff. While a proponent can estimate costs based on the published usage fees, we strongly encourage all proponents to contact us directly for a quote. Many factors can impact the number of days required to complete certain measurements, including core condition, measurement resolution, preparation time, and who makes the measurements (you vs. GCR staff). GCR staff will be able to generate a more accurate cost estimate for inclusion with your proposal.
- Visiting the GCR to Collect Data
While there is no difference in cost for services or instrument use, many users still opt to visit the GCR as this allows for detailed examination of cores and increased adaptability of measurement (e.g. - altering measurement resolution). - Data Collection by GCR Staff
For those unable to visit the GCR, technical staff can make measurements on core sections and discrete samples on your behalf, for no additional cost. While GCR staff strive to complete measurements as quickly as possible, the actual turnaround time can be highly variable based on other laboratory activities and staff availability. Instrument availability is prioritized for those visiting the GCR to make measurements themself.

Broader Impacts/Workshops
The GCR can also generate quotes for instrument use and sample measurement included in Broader Impacts activities or for workshops. In addition to supporting individual researchers, the GCR is available for a wide range of workshops and meetings, including those for legacy projects and outreach events. Early consultation with the GCR is strongly encouraged, and GCR staff can provide guidance and suggestions prior to proposal submission.
Additional costs to consider for a visit to the GCR include:
- Airfare/Travel
- Accommodations
- Local Transportation
- Meals & Incidentals
There is no cost for use of conference rooms in the Scientific Ocean Drilling Building. There is also no cost for our conference services to assist with arranging for lunch catering (including setup and cleanup), however proponents will need to pay catering vendors directly.
